How to play Maze Chase

Maze Chase is a fast arcade game for one player. You are Chompy, a round little muncher with a leaf on its head. Your job is to clear a neon maze of dots while four ghosts try to catch you. Every maze on this site is an original layout.

Goal

Eat every dot in the maze to finish the level. Each dot is worth 10 points. Then a new level starts, and the ghosts get a little faster. Try to reach the highest level and the best score you can.

Controls

  1. Press an arrow key (or W, A, S, D) to start. On a phone, swipe on the maze or use the arrow pad under it.
  2. You can press a turn early. Chompy remembers it for a moment and turns at the next opening.
  3. Press Space or P to pause. The game also pauses when you switch tabs.

The ghosts

The four ghosts each think in their own way. Blaze (red) heads straight for you. Rosa (pink) aims a few squares in front of you to cut you off. Frost (cyan) works with Blaze to trap you from the other side. Sunny (orange) chases you from far away but gets shy up close. Every so often they all stop chasing and drift to their own corners for a few seconds.

Power pellets and bonuses

The big glowing dots are power pellets (50 points). Eat one and the ghosts turn blue and run away. Touch a blue ghost to send its eyes back home: 200 points, then 400, 800 and 1,600 for more ghosts on the same pellet. When a blue ghost starts to flash, it is about to turn back. Twice per level a fruit appears under the ghost house for a few seconds. Grab it for extra points. You also win an extra life every 10,000 points.

End of the game

You start with three lives. A normal ghost that touches you takes one life. When all lives are gone, the game is over. Your best score for each difficulty is saved in this browser. For more arcade fun, try Snake or Space Shooter.

Strategy tips

  • Save the power pellets. Clear the dots around a pellet first, then eat it when ghosts are close. That way you can catch several of them at once.
  • Use the tunnel. Ghosts slow down in the side tunnel, but you do not. It is the best escape when you are chased.
  • Turn early. Press the next direction before you reach a corner. Smooth turns keep you ahead of the ghosts.
  • Watch the corners phase. When the ghosts drift to their corners, it is a safe time to clear the middle of the maze.
  • Do not leave lonely dots. The last few dots in far corners are the hardest to get. Clear each area fully before moving on.

Maze Chase FAQ

Is this game similar to Pac-Man?

It is similar in style: you eat dots in a maze and avoid ghosts. But Maze Chase is our own game. The mazes, the hero and the art are all original.

Why do the ghosts sometimes turn around?

Ghosts turn around when they switch between chasing you and heading to their corners, and when you eat a power pellet. It is a good moment to change your path.

What does the difficulty setting change?

Easy makes the ghosts slower and keeps them blue for longer. Hard makes them faster, shorter to scare and quicker to leave the ghost house. Each difficulty has its own best score.

How do I play on a phone?

Swipe on the maze in the direction you want to go, or use the arrow pad under it. Tap the maze to start or to go on after a pause.
