Snake

Eat the food, grow longer and do not bite yourself.

How to play Snake

Snake is a classic arcade game for one player. You steer a snake around a square field. The snake never stops moving. Each time it eats a piece of food, it grows one square longer, and the game gets harder.

Goal

Eat as much food as you can and get the highest score. Each piece of food is worth 10 points. A longer snake is harder to steer, so every point counts.

Controls

  1. Press an arrow key (or W, A, S, D) to start. On a phone, swipe on the field or use the arrow pad under it.
  2. The snake turns in the direction you choose. It cannot turn straight back on itself.
  3. You can press two keys quickly, like up then left, to make a tight turn. The game remembers both.
  4. Press Space or P to pause, or use the Pause button. The game also pauses when you switch to another tab.

Speed and walls

Pick Easy, Medium or Hard to set how fast the snake moves. It also speeds up a little each time it eats. With Walls: On, hitting the edge ends the game. With Walls: Off, the snake comes out on the other side.

End of the game

The game ends when the snake runs into its own body, or into a wall when walls are on. Your best score for each speed is saved in this browser. Fill the whole field and you have a perfect game. Want another quick game? Try 2048 or Block Puzzle.

Strategy tips

  • Stay near the edges. Early on, follow the walls and keep the middle open. You will have more room to turn later.
  • Do not chase food in a straight line. Plan a path that leaves you a way out after you eat.
  • Move in loops. When the snake is long, sweep the field in back-and-forth rows. This keeps your body in neat lines and away from your head.
  • Watch your tail. The square your tail is leaving is safe to move into. Following your tail is a good way to buy time.
  • Pause to think. If the field gets crowded, press Space and look for the safest route before you go on.

Snake FAQ

Why did my turn not work?

The snake cannot reverse into itself, so pressing the opposite direction does nothing. If you want to turn around, turn twice, for example up and then left.

What is the difference between walls on and off?

With walls on, touching the edge ends the game. With walls off, the snake goes through the edge and comes back on the opposite side. Each setting keeps its own best score.

How do I play on a phone?

Swipe on the field in the direction you want to go, or use the arrow pad under the field. Tap the field to start or to go on after a pause.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. Your best score for each speed is saved in this browser. A game in progress is not saved, so finish it before you close the page.
