How to play Brick Breaker

Brick Breaker is a classic arcade game for one player. A wall of colourful bricks hangs at the top of the field. You move a paddle along the bottom and bounce a ball up into the wall. Every brick the ball hits breaks. Clear all the bricks to finish the level.

Goal

Break every brick on all 24 levels and get the highest score. Do not let the ball fall past your paddle.

Controls

  1. Move the paddle with the mouse, by dragging your finger on the field, or with the arrow keys (or A and D). On a phone you can also hold the arrow buttons under the field.
  2. The ball waits on the paddle. Press Space, click or tap to launch it.
  3. Where the ball lands on the paddle sets its angle. The middle sends it straight up. The ends send it off to the side at a steep angle.
  4. Press P or the Pause button to take a break. The game also pauses when you switch tabs.

Bricks

Coloured bricks break with one hit. Silver bricks need two hits and gold bricks need three; cracks show how close they are to breaking. Dark steel bricks never break, so you must play around them.

Power-ups

Some bricks drop a capsule. Catch it with your paddle to use it:

  • W – Wide: a longer paddle for a while.
  • M – Multi-ball: every ball splits into three.
  • S – Slow: the ball slows down for a while.
  • L – Laser: press Space, click or tap to fire lasers that break bricks.
  • + – Extra life.

End of the game

You lose a life when the last ball falls off the bottom. When all lives are gone, the game is over. Each level you reach is unlocked in the Level menu, so you can start there next time. The ball gets a little faster on later levels and the longer you keep it in play. Your best score for each difficulty is saved in this browser. Strategy tips

  • Aim with the paddle ends. Hitting the ball near an edge sends it sideways. Use this to reach bricks in the corners.
  • Break through to the top. If you open a gap in the wall, the ball can get behind the bricks and break many of them on its own.
  • Save the laser for hard spots. Lasers are great against gold bricks and bricks hidden between steel.
  • Do not chase every capsule. Missing the ball costs a life. Only go for a power-up if the ball is high up.
  • Use multi-ball wisely. With many balls, keep your paddle under the lowest one and let the others do the work.

Brick Breaker FAQ

Is this the same as Breakout?

It is a brick-breaking game in the same style as classic Breakout and Arkanoid, with its own levels, power-ups and art.

How do I control the angle of the ball?

The ball bounces off the paddle at an angle that depends on where it lands. The centre sends it almost straight up, the ends send it far to the side.

Can I start from a later level?

Yes. Every level you reach is unlocked. Pick it from the Level menu above the field to start there.

Is my game saved?

Your best score and unlocked levels are saved in this browser. A game in progress is saved at the start of each level and after each lost ball, so you can come back to it.
