How to play Air Hockey

Air Hockey is a fast table game for two. Each player holds a round mallet and guards a goal at one end of a slippery table. The puck glides almost without friction and bounces off the side rails, so a good shot can come from any angle.

Goal

Hit the puck into your opponent's goal. The first player to score 7 goals wins the match.

Controls

  1. Your mallet is the pink one at the bottom. Move the mouse or drag your finger on the table, and the mallet follows.
  2. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys (or W, A, S, D) to move.
  3. Your mallet must stay in your own half. It cannot cross the red centre line.
  4. Hit the puck while your mallet is moving. The faster you swing, the harder the shot.
  5. Press Space or P, or the Pause button, to pause.

Two players on one device

Choose 2 Players and lay the phone or tablet flat between you. Each player drags in their own half: a finger that starts in the bottom half moves the pink mallet, one that starts in the top half moves the blue mallet. Both can play at the same time. On a computer, one player uses the arrow keys and the other uses W, A, S, D.

Scoring and serving

A goal counts when the puck crosses the goal line between the two posts. After a goal, the puck is placed in the half of the player who let it in, so they serve next. Against the computer, pick Easy, Medium or Hard. On Hard it moves fast, predicts bank shots and aims for the corners. Your wins on each level are counted in this browser.

Strategy tips

  • Guard the middle. When you are not attacking, keep your mallet in front of your goal, a little way out. Most shots come straight down the centre.
  • Use the rails. A bank shot off the side rail comes in at an angle that is hard to read. Aim at the rail, not at the goal.
  • Hit through the puck. Do not just touch it. Swing your mallet through the puck towards your target for a strong, straight shot.
  • Do not chase every puck. If the puck is in the other half, go back to defence instead of waiting at the centre line.
  • Watch out for rebounds. A shot that hits your opponent's mallet can fly back fast. Be ready to block right after you shoot.

Air Hockey FAQ

Can two people play on one phone?

Yes. Pick 2 Players, put the device flat between you and each drag in your own half. The game tracks several fingers at once.

How do I win?

Be the first to score 7 goals. The score is shown above the table and in large numbers on each half.

Why can my mallet not reach the puck?

Each mallet must stay in its own half, as on a real table. Wait for the puck to come to your side, or push it back before it stops.

What changes between the computer levels?

Higher levels move faster, react sooner, aim more precisely and use bank shots. Easy is slow and often aims straight at the middle.
