Pig Dice Game

Roll again or hold? A 1 loses your turn. First to 100 wins.

How to play Pig

Pig is a simple and exciting dice game. All you need is one die and a bit of nerve. On your turn you roll as many times as you like to collect points. But if you roll a 1, you lose everything from that turn. It is great for kids and fun for grown-ups too.

Goal

Be the first player to reach 100 points.

Turn by turn

  1. Press Roll. The number on the die is added to your turn total.
  2. Roll again as often as you like. Each roll adds more points to the turn total.
  3. If you roll a 1, your turn total is lost and your turn ends. Your saved score stays safe.
  4. Press Hold to stop. Your turn total is added to your score, and the other player goes.

The big question every time is: roll again or hold? Rolling more can win you lots of points, but every roll has a 1 in 6 chance of a 1.

For example, you roll a 4, a 6 and a 3. Your turn total is 13. If you hold now, 13 points go to your score. If you roll again and get a 1, those 13 points are gone.

Two-Dice Pig

Choose Two dice for a wilder game. Now you roll two dice and add both numbers. If one die shows a 1, you lose the turn total, just like before. If both dice show 1, it is even worse: your whole score drops back to 0.

End of the game

As soon as your score plus your turn total reaches 100, you win right away. The race track above the dice shows how close each pig is to the finish flag.

Strategy tips

  • Hold at about 20. With one die, holding when your turn total reaches 20 is a simple rule that works well.
  • Do not stop too early. Holding at 6 or 8 feels safe, but it gives your opponent many more turns to catch up.
  • Take more risk when behind. If the other player is close to 100, small turns will not save you. Keep rolling.
  • Play safe when ahead. With a big lead, bank smaller totals and let your opponent take the risks.
  • Respect double 1s. In Two-Dice Pig a big saved score can vanish, so hold a bit earlier once your score is high.

Pig Dice Game FAQ

What are the chances of rolling a 1?

With one die it is 1 in 6 every roll. With two dice, the chance that at least one die shows a 1 is 11 in 36, almost 1 in 3.

Is going first an advantage?

A little. With perfect play the first player wins about 53% of games, so you can switch who starts with the First move setting.

Is this the same as Pass the Pigs?

No. Pass the Pigs is a branded game that uses small pig figures instead of dice. This is the classic Pig dice game, which shares the same roll-or-hold idea.

How strong is the computer?

Easy holds early and often. Medium holds at 20. Hard plays the known best strategy for Pig, worked out for every possible score, so it wins more than half its games even against good players.
