How to play Color Flood

Color Flood is a quick puzzle about spreading paint. The board is a square of coloured tiles in random order. The flood starts in the top-left corner and grows each time you pick a new colour.

Goal

Turn the whole board into a single colour before you use up all your moves. The move limit is shown above the board.

Turn by turn

  1. Your flood is the patch of tiles joined to the top-left corner that share its colour.
  2. Pick a colour with the round buttons under the board, by tapping any tile of that colour, or with the number keys 1 to 7.
  3. The whole flood changes to that colour. Every touching tile of the same colour joins the flood, so it grows.
  4. Each pick uses one move. You cannot pick the colour the flood already has.
  5. Press Undo to take back a move. Press Hint to see which colour the computer would pick next and how many moves it still needs.

Board sizes

Easy is 10×10 with five colours, Medium is 14×14 with six colours and Hard is 18×18 with seven colours. For each new board the computer plans its own solution. The move limit is its score plus a few spare moves: six on Easy, four on Medium and Hard. Turn on Symbols to add a shape to each colour, which helps if some colours look alike to you.

End of the game

You win as soon as the board is one colour. If the last move runs out first, the game is over, but you can still undo and try another path. Like colour puzzles? Try Same Game.

Strategy tips

  • Head for the middle. A flood that reaches the centre early touches far more tiles than one that creeps along an edge.
  • Look one move ahead. The colour that adds the most tiles now is not always best. Pick the one that opens up big patches for the next move.
  • Finish off colours. When only a few tiles of one colour are left, sweep them up. Each colour you clear is one less you will need later.
  • Watch the far corner. The bottom-right corner is the farthest away. Make sure your flood keeps a path open towards it.
  • Count your spare moves. The limit is only a little above the computer's plan, so every wasted pick counts.

Color Flood FAQ

Can every board be solved?

Yes. The computer solves every board before you play it, and the move limit is never lower than its own solution.

Can I beat the computer?

Yes. The computer uses a fast search, not a perfect one. If you finish in fewer moves than its plan, the game tells you.

Is this the same as Flood-It?

Yes, Color Flood follows the same rules as Flood-It and Drench: flood from the corner and fill the board in a limited number of moves.

What do the symbols do?

They add a shape to each colour, so you can tell them apart without relying on colour alone.
